ZTIWindowsUpdate.wsf fix … Part II

Had a lot of feedback this morning my with yesterday’s post on ZTIWindowsUpdate.wsf. (Thanks Johan!)

(I even heard from a little birdie that my fix was used within Microsoft to fix a customer escalation – You’re welcome. :^)…

Anywho, I have a confession to make… I kicked off my standard regression test suite last night (all automated of course), and by the time I checked it out this morning, whoops, it caused a regression (failure) on my Windows 7 images.

Background

Took me several hours to track this one down…

ZTIWIndowsUpdate.wsf would attempt to install the same two packages on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 over and over again:

INSTALL - 1b5b2381-f192-40bb-96ac-3575ae9cb7c5 - Definition Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - KB2310138 (Definition 1.177.26.0) - 105 MB

Eventually, ZTIWindowsUpdate would give up after the usual 7 retries, but the error would be reported in the BDD.log file.

It only happened on the machines that I installed Microsoft Security Essentials.

It also only happened on machines that were connecting to my WSUS server, Windows Update was fine. This was the clue that help me understand what was going on.

Thanks to Lawrence Garvin for helping to explain the problem in this WSUS thread:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/68696a03-e2e3-49fc-af2f-407bcde8c4e4/forefront-updates-repeatedly-offered?forum=winserverwsus

Fix

Easy!

I went to my WSUS server, and ran a cleanup.

Done.

Take away

Windows Update / WSUS is a crazy system. Just when you think you understand all the rules, along comes some bad package, or some other assumptions that need to be addressed. As the WSUS TechNet thread above mentioned WU Package can be just plain “Defective”. Be warned. :^(
